Opinion: The Fear of Little Women and Barbie.

There was a stupid campaign a couple of years ago to get men to watch Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. (…Frasier Crane’s Nightmare Inn?)

Apparently all of us knuckle-dragging neanderthal men were all “afraid” to watch a period drama (that’s already been adapted a million times already) that doesn’t haves tits or explosions.

I personally have no interest in the film since…

A. I usually hate “coming of age” stories because I find that period of life depressing from my own experiences,

B. Because “Seinfeld Is Unfunny” and while it was a innovative novel at the time it’s been copied a million times since it’s release so it’s not “new” anymore.

C. Because to me straight period dramas are like chocolate. You need some milk (suspense, horror, political intrigue) to make it taste great.

D. Because people like the author of that stupid article keep badgering me to see it so I’m not going to out of petty spite.

E. It’s not about actual tiny women like “The Borrowers”. (like I originally thought.)

It’s the same with another Greta Gerwig film “Barbie” (2023).

It’s apparently a revolutionary movie because until the groundbreaking film Ghostbusters (2016) “women hadn’t really been in movies before”. (A statement so monumentally stupid it makes me actually angry.)

It’s also the first feminist film! (If we ignore Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child of course.)

It’s also about a global multimedia brand I have little to no interest in.

It’s like if everyone was like “Hey Nate! You gotta watch the new He-Man movie it’s a He-Man movie but it’s ACTUALLY about limiting the power of the federal government.”

I would be like “What? That makes no sense. It’s an action figure what does that have to do with Libertarianism?”

But for some reason once the word FEMINISM is uttered we all shut off our brains and must clap like braindead seals about how “progressive” something is even if it doesn’t make any sense.

It’s not even “subversive” since it’s incredibly obvious and pandering to the cultural zeitgeist like using American Flags everywhere in Spider-Man after 9/11.

For some reason when a movie stars a man it can be about anything…

But when a movie stars a woman…sorry all we got is GIRL POWER™.

I actually find it incredibly demeaning to women pretending that they are all perpetual victims who need to be rescued.

But what do I know? I’m too “afraid” to watch Little Women.

Well…

Until then…

I’m Nathan Edward Priem and THAT was something else.
